Jason McCrank - Geophysics Student

The pride that the interviewers had in their jobs with Shell caught my interest, so I was delighted when I was offered the opportunity to work as a geophysics summer student.

When I arrived to work, I found that my supervisor had defined an exciting and challenging problem for me to tackle. The assignment was to use Shell’s advanced proprietary seismic interpretation technology to track fracture trends in an Alberta Foothills gas field. The trends would allow Shell to prioritize prospects for future development potential. With excellent support from my supervisor, the task offered the opportunity to creatively explore novel techniques for interpreting seismic data, as well as the chance to work with team members of other disciplines.

Shell Canada employees are passionate about their work. The opportunity to work with and learn from various team members with a very high level of technical expertise was inspiring. Shell emphasizes employee training and development, which holds true for summer students who are encouraged to attend courses, field trips, and conferences.

Calgary is a vibrant city that offers a multitude of extracurricular opportunities. As a summer student, I was able to participate in a number of activities with other Shell Canada employees and summer students; including access to the Shell Active Living Centre, the opportunity to play on a variety of sports teams, a summer students camping trip, and the Calgary Stampede. Additionally, with the Rocky Mountains are so close to town, there’s no excuse for not getting out on a weekend.

In all, my summer experience was both fun and motivating. It reaffirmed my impression that Shell Canada employees take great pride in a company that is respected as an industry leader in areas of training, expertise, and ethical safety and environmental business practices.
