Jia Mu - JDE Support/Programmer

At Shell, interns are a crucial part of the workforce. We share the same job responsibilities as full-time employees and are given real work with actual problems to solve and real projects, whether we stay here for only 4 months or more.

When I was at school, I was concerned that once I entered the work force, life would become boring and stale. It's an amazing feeling to wake up wanting to go to work and never having to watch the clock waiting to go home. I have felt that sense of anticipation and excitement since the first day at Shell Canada during my internship.

I have worked in a support role that definitely helped me to improve my technical troubleshooting skills, as well as, knowledge on business and production side. I also had some programming assignments and developed an application for IT change management. It felt good to know that I was given an opportunity to make a useful contribution to the group in a short time.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to attend several internal and external courses such as the iSeries, and JDE developer training. Everyone was willing to help and share his or her specialty knowledge. I deeply appreciated how much I learned from coworkers, leaders, mentors, and friends not just in terms of technical knowledge and experience, but also interpersonal skills, leadership, planning, and life in general.

Like many of those who join Shell, I took full advantage of the numerous benefits the company offers. My favourite benefit has to be the 1.5 flex off days every month.

Free hot chocolate in every kitchen also seems to be pretty popular. At Shell we don’t spend all day, every day working. We toss Frisbees in Prince’s Island park, teach and play with children on the Shell Days of Caring.

We also love to simply hang out together. Calgary Shell Center has sports facilities and several buildings have Cable TV’s set up. When we are tired of staring at the computer monitor, there is plenty to do to clear our head.
