Nicole Hughes - Completions Engineer

I was hired by Shell in Calgary as a co-op student in production engineering for Foothills , having completed two previous work terms with another oil and gas company. I immediately noticed a difference in the companies – I felt less like “the co-op student” and more like a contributing team member. I would soon learn that this was the Shell culture – something that was not only talked about, but also displayed every day in the actions of its people.

I returned to Shell for a second work term, this time in the Completions group of Well Engineering. I was given meaningful projects that were put into use immediately. Shell put a lot of effort into showing myself and other students all sides of the business and encouraged us to pursue our interests within the company.

When I was offered a full-time position, my decision was easy to make – what attracted me to Shell were the people, the excellent training offered to subsurface engineers (both in-house and external), and the potential to move around the company. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to live in a great city like Calgary.

I am now working as a Completions Engineer and find my job technically challenging and interesting. I get many opportunities to go to the field, and am looking forward to my upcoming overseas training courses. Shell is a technologically advanced and innovative company that treats its people well, and I’m proud to say I’m a part of it.
