Customers help Shell award $1 million to environmental organizations

02 Dec 2011

Our customers have spoken and Shell Canada listened. Today Shell announced that $1 million has been awarded to Canadian environmental organizations through the FuellingChange™ program.

As we near the end of our centennial year in Canada, we wanted to mark this occasion by recognizing those Canadian environmental projects that are making a difference. We know that finding solutions to today’s environmental challenges requires the commitment of all Canadians, and today, our customers have spoken.

Lorraine Mitchelmore, Shell Canada’s President and Country Chair

The FuellingChange™ program allows Canadians to vote on environmental programs that help improve, protect and restore air, land and water.

Today two Canadian organizations, The Canadian Wildlife Federation and the Canadian Commuter Challenge each received $100,000 from the FuellingChange™ program. The Canadian Wildlife Federation will be using the money in support of its “Amazing Turtle Migration” program which educates Canadians in marine conservation issues and Canadian Commuter Challenge will use the cash to urge drivers to “Give Your Car a Day Off” in cities across Canada.

“We’re ecstatic Canadians voted for our project and this shows they’re really interested in what we do,” said Kathryn Winkler, Executive Director of the Canadian Commuter Challenge. “We’re really confident that more people will get onboard as we expand our program.”

Wade Luzny, CEO and Executive Vice President of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, was equally as enthused.

“We were thrilled to receive $100,000 from the Fuelling Change program for our Amazing Turtle Migration project,” he said. “The project will allow Canadians to follow the real time journey of tagged leatherbacks as they make their way to their southern nesting beaches.”

54 environmental organizations received a total of $1 million in funding.

FuellingChange™ is Shell Canada’s new social investment program, which gives customers the choice of how Shell invests in communities. FuellingChange™ is simple. Customers make a purchase at any Shell retail station in Canada. They then visit www.shell.ca/fuellingchange to enter the codes from their receipts to receive 10 votes which they can cast votes for the project they want the company to support.

Environmental projects short-listed to participate in the program – focused on land, water and air are eligible to receive funding at three grant levels: $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000 and multiple projects will be awarded funding at each of these three levels. In addition, those organizations not successful through the voting process are still eligible to receive $10,000 for their project.

The second cycle of FuellingChange™ began on November 4, 2011 with voting continuing until April 30, 2012. For more information on the program and for a complete list of this year’s FuellingChange™ recipient organizations go to www.shell.ca/fuellingchange.
