Proposed Mackenzie Gas Project

Shell and three other gas producer companies (Imperial Oil Resources, ConocoPhillips Canada & ExxonMobil Canada) are working with the Aboriginal Pipeline Group (APG), on a proposed 1200-km pipeline to transport onshore natural gas reserves in the Mackenzie Delta to southern markets. The APG represents the ownership interest of the Aboriginal peoples of the Northwest Territories in the pipeline.

About the Mackenzie Gas Project

The three natural gas fields that will provide anchor volumes to the proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline are:

  • Taglu, operated by Imperial and located about 120 km northwest of Inuvik.
  • Parsons Lake, held by ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil and operated by ConocoPhillips and located about 45 km northeast of Inuvik.
  • Niglintgak, operated by Shell and located about 120 km northwest of Inuvik.

The Mackenzie Gas Project consists of:

  • Natural gas field development facilities to process gas from the three anchor gas fields.
  • A gathering system to collect natural gas and associated natural gas liquids (NGL) from the three anchor fields and pipeline them to natural gas compression and NGL facilities in the Inuvik area.
  • An NGL pipeline from the Inuvik area to Norman Wells.
  • A transmission pipeline system from the Inuvik area south along the Mackenzie Valley via Norman Wells, to connect to the existing natural gas pipeline system in northwestern Alberta for delivery to market.

Pending regulatory approvals and the final decision to construct, gas production in excess of 800 million cubic feet a day would potentially begin no earlier than 2014.
