Shell Canada applied to the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and Alberta Environment for approval to construct and operate Scotford Upgrader 2 adjacent to Shell’s existing Scotford Facilities near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.
The proposed Scotford Upgrader 2 will be constructed in four phases and process Shell’s share of future Athabasca mineable bitumen production as well as bitumen from the company’s in situ oil sands developments.
Scotford Upgrader 2 could ultimately process up to 400,000 barrels-a-day of oil sands bitumen into a range of synthetic crude oil products.
Financial approval to proceed with Scotford Upgrader 2 will depend on the outcome of regulatory processes, market conditions, final project costs and consultation with key stakeholders.
