FuellingChange™ How It Works
Find out how to apply for a FuellingChange grant, which projects are eligible and what funding levels are available.

How it works
To apply:
- Develop a project plan that fits into one of the three granting levels ($25,000, $50,000 or $100,000) based on eligibility
- Submit an application by clicking on the link below
- Answer the series of questions on the application form in a clear and precise manner
- All the key information from your application will automatically be part of your project profile. Make sure your answers are written for a general audience
Submit your application:- Give your project a compelling title
- Tell Canadians about your organization and your project
- Highlight how your project will benefit Canada’s environment and be clear about how you propose to use the grant money
Review process:- Applications will be reviewed by a panel to ensure they meet funding criteria identified
- Applications will be pre-selected for participation in FuellingChange
- If successful, applicants will receive further information on how to proceed with their application.
- All applicants will receive notification of the status of their application within 45 days of the application deadline
- Funds will be awarded at the end of each voting cycle.
Project timeline:Projects are to be completed within two years of start date.

Funding
Funding will be provided to grassroots, action-oriented projects that improve, restore or protect the Canadian environment in three categories - land, air and water. Projects can be national, provincial or regional in scope.
Land- Protecting and restoring sensitive and natural areas
- Biodiversity and wildlife protection and management
- Reducing environmental footprint
Air- Reducing emissions that contribute to air pollution
- Climate change and offsets
- Promoting or demonstrating energy efficiency
Water- Improving water quality
- Sustainable water use
- Responsible management or awareness of watershed and water related issues
Granting levelsGrants will be awarded in the amounts of $25,000, $50,000, and $100,000.
3 grants of $100,000
6 grants of $50,000
12 grants of $25,000Note: Projects which have started prior to the beginning of the voting cycle are eligible to participate, as long as the project end date exceeds the end of the current voting cycle.
Eligibility
The following groups are eligible to apply for a $25,000 grant:
- Community groups
- Community associations
- Municipalities
- Aboriginal organizations
- Educational institutions K-12 to Post-Secondary
- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) /provincially registered environmental organizations
The following groups are eligible to apply for $50,000 and $100,000 grants:- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) /provincially registered environmental organizations
The following are not eligible for a grant:- Individuals or individuals pursuits
- For-profit organization
- Private foundations
- Fraternal and labour organizations
- Political parties or lobby groups
We Fund- Projects with a strong environmental action component
- Educational programs focused on the environment (to include an action-oriented component to the program)
- Material and supply costs
- Printing and production costs
- Communication and distribution costs
- Equipment purchase or rental costs
- Vehicle rental and operations costs
- A reasonable amount for travel expenses
- Translation costs
- Contractor and consultant fees
- Up to 20 percent of the project’s overhead and/or administrative costs
- Continuation of projects already in place (for example: phase two of a project or expansion of a project/program).
We Don’t Fund- Activities required by laws and/or mandated by other levels of government
- Lobbying, advocacy or fundraising activities
- Projects for personal gain or business profit
- Projects primarily focused on the purchase of capital assets
- Core operating expenses
- Expenses to attend conferences and workshops
- Activities focused primarily on research and monitoring activities
- Purchase or construction of land and buildings
- Projects designed to only landscape/beautify an area
- Projects outside of Canada
- Salary and/or wages (although can be included in 10 per cent of administrative costs)
- Special events, festivals and open-houses (unless it clearly demonstrates a measurable environmental impact and has an action-oriented component included)
Other guidance:Shell FuellingChange prefers to fund projects in public or publicly accessible spaces but will consider support if a conservation easement or similar arrangement is in place to allow for broad public benefit.
