Energy-efficient lubricants for vehicles mean improved fuel economy. When we developed our latest lubricant, Shell Rimula R6 LME, our technology challenge was to formulate an oil with low viscosity to reduce friction in the engine with the same protective benefits of more viscous oil which produces a thicker protective film on engine parts.
Our solution was to use oils more resistant to thinning at high temperatures, with “anti-wear boosters” that act like microscopic springy balls to hold the metal surfaces apart and reduce friction.
