Frequently Asked Questions

Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines

1. Why is Shell launching a new fuel?

Shell is dedicated to continuous product improvement and innovation. We strive to provide drivers with gasolines that can help improve their vehicles’ performance. Our experts spend countless hours listening to consumers to better understand their needs. We also work with the industry, such as auto manufacturers, allowing Shell to understand the needs of changing vehicle technologies to drive product development for improved performance.

Advanced engine technologies are coming to the market and consumers are keeping their cars longer. Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious about the quality of the products they put into their vehicles because they want to protect their investment. Hence, the increased need for a gasoline that can clean and protect critical engine parts.

The new Shell Nitrogen Enriched formulation delivers 20 percent more active cleaning agents than before, designed to clean and protect engine’s intake valves and fuel injectors from performance-robbing “gunk”. So no matter what you drive, no other gasoline protects better than the new Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines.

2. How fast do the NEW Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines clean?

New Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines are designed to begin removing gunky build-up left behind by lower-quality gasolines with the first tank. We recommend the consistent use of high-quality Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines to take full advantage of both their cleaning power and protection against gunk that can be left by lower quality gasolines.

3. What does nitrogen do and how will it help the performance of my vehicle?

Nitrogen is a critical element of the active cleaning molecule found in the Shell Nitrogen Enriched cleaning system. Enriching this molecule and the overall cleaning system with nitrogen makes it more thermally stable and therefore more effective in tough engine conditions with higher temperatures and increased pressures. Auto manufacturers recognize that a clean engine is more fuel efficient, producing fewer emissions and allowing vehicles to perform at their best. The Nitrogen Enriched cleaning system not only prevents gunk, but also actually cleans up gunk left by lower quality gasolines in modern and conventional engines. All three grades of Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines contain 20 percent more active cleaning agents than before to help protect critical engine parts from performance-robbing gunk better than before.

4. What is engine gunk?

The technical term for engine gunk is carbon deposits.  Carbon deposits can build up on critical engine parts as the result of processes that occur in the engine during its operation.  Since gasoline primarily contains carbon and hydrogen molecules, these processes can create a residue build-up of carbon particles and can result in performance problems for engines.

5. Where does gunky build-up on an engine come from?

Carbon deposit build-up on critical engine parts is the result of various chemical and physical processes that occur in the engine during its operation. These processes can create a residue, which consists of carbon particles that may build up on intake valves and fuel injectors. Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines are designed to help keep your engine clean and actively protect it from performance-robbing gunk.

6. Is engine gunk harmful?

Gunk on intake valves and fuel injectors can result in deposit-related drivability problems. Gunk acts like a sponge, absorbing and trapping gasoline, and making the combustion less efficient. Industry and literature data also refer to potential engine performance problems. Industry data indicates that a cleaner engine can perform as originally designed, making it more fuel efficient with lower emissions. Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines contain a patented formula, exclusive to Shell, designed to actively clean and protect against performance-robbing gunk, in all three grades.

7. What vehicles benefit the most from using the NEW Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines?

No matter what you drive, the new Shell Nitrogen Enriched formulation works in all types of engines, both conventional and modern. In conventional engines, the unique, patented Shell Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System cleans and protects intake valves and fuel injectors, so the engine can perform at its best. In modern engines, like direct injection and turbo-charged, fuel injectors are subject to greater heat and pressure, which can cause a breakdown of cleaning agents. The new Shell Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System is designed to maintain thermal stability and work under extremely hot engine temperatures, actively cleaning and protecting against performance-robbing gunk.

8. Why did you see the need to increase your additive rate by 20 percent?

Shell is dedicated to continuous product improvement and innovation. In addition to providing a new formulation, we were able to increase the effectiveness of the patented cleaning system in all three grades of Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines by increasing the amount of additive we put into the fuel by 20 percent.

9. Did you test Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines in all kinds of vehicles?

New Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines have been extensively tested, clocking more than 560,000 kms in various engines and vehicles, including conventional, modern turbo-charged, direct fuel-injected, and hybrid engines. These tests show that no other gasoline protects critical engine parts better than Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines. The new formulation is designed to clean and protect against harmful buildup of carbon deposits or “gunk” on intake valves and fuel injectors.

10. What makes Shell V-Power different?

Shell V-Power is our best, most advanced product. It contains the highest concentration of the new Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System to provide maximum protection against performance-robbing gunk. Shell V-Power helps to seek and destroy engine gunk that lower-quality gasolines can leave behind faster than other grades of Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasoline.
