Learn more about Telematics and how you can combine vehicle data with fuel card data for better fleet management insights.

What is a Telematics device?

A Telematics device is a small box (about the size of a pack of cards) that usually sits on or behind the dashboard. It’s the hardware that collects the data from your vehicle, allowing you to benefit from live tracking and instant insights into your fleet’s performance.

How does Shell Telematics work?

Telematics devices use telecommunication technology to locate, track and monitor vehicles. The information gathered by the device is transferred via mobile internet to a secure server in the cloud that is accessible when you log-in to either the Shell Telematics portal or app.

What information does Shell Telematics capture?

With Shell Telematics, you can track fuel spend, locate drivers in near real-time and monitor driver performance against set criteria to correct inefficient driving habits.

Our user-interface is highly intuitive. It has been designed to make it easy to find what you need on the Shell Telematics dashboard.

How does Shell handle data privacy?

Our data is encrypted using SSL encryption similar to those used by banks. The customer defines who has access to their database and what they have access to within it. Our employees only access databases for troubleshooting purposes and this is upon customer approval. To ensure complete transparency and accountability, all access into a customer database is audited and stored indefinitely within the database audit log for the customer to see. Please review our security policy guide for more detailed information.

How can I help my drivers understand why we’re implementing these tools?

It’s quite common for drivers to feel like they aren’t trusted when new software is being implemented. Sharing your pain points and helping them to understand all the benefits should help get them on board. Some key highlights to share with drivers are how Shell Telematics will support:

  • A safer environment by managing working hours and fleet maintenance
  • Improving efficiency through optimized route planning
  • Reaching sustainable goals by cutting down on vehicle emissions.

Can Telematics make driving less stressful?

Telematics systems can be a great way to remove work-related distractions from a driver’s routine by providing reactive schedules and managing client expectations. Taking this responsibility away from a driver is a great way to help reduce stress levels behind the wheel. Data on driving behaviour also gives an opportunity to conduct coaching tailored to the specific driver’s needs which can empower drivers and increase their engagement levels.

How can Telematics help to cut out unexpected vehicle downtime?

Fleet vehicles are put through a great deal of stresses and strains over time, and breakdowns and unplanned maintenance can impact productivity and profit. Our Shell Telematics helps by giving you timely information to proactively manage repairs.
