As part of our global promise to the development of new fuels, we aim to: meet growing transport demands; reduce CO2 emissions; improve air quality; and actively meet your needs as a modern driver.

With that in mind, we are excited to share with you the launch of Canada’s first retail hydrogen refuelling station in downtown Vancouver, in association with Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation (HTEC).

What makes us more excited however, is where this might lead, with further retail hydrogen refueling sites set to open in the Vancouver area soon. Follow our progress as we pioneer the future of transport fuel and keep your eyes peeled for a Shell retail hydrogen refuelling station opening near you in the future.

How does hydrogen fuel work?

Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles convert compressed hydrogen into electricity, powering the vehicle’s motor, while only producing heat and water vapour. This means no harmful emissions are emitted from your exhaust pipe.

With a similar driving experience to that of battery electric vehicles, but with zero local emissions, hydrogen-powered vehicles offer a direct alternative to those with conventional engines.

How does hydrogen fuel compare to regular gas?

Hydrogen-powered vehicles are:

  • Comparable to cars run on regular gas in terms of acceleration and general performance
  • Quick to refuel, taking between 3-5 minutes to fill your tank
  • Capable of a driving range of up to 700km without refuelling

Watch the video below to learn more about hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles and see how the launch of our retail hydrogen refuelling stations can help you go well on all your future journeys.
