Ray Kroll, Shell Retiree

Ray Kroll, Shell Retiree

During my 29+ years in Shell, and now as a retiree, I have been able to access volunteer funding for many organizations. At @FRSCSOCIETY, I help biologists collect data to prevent White Sturgeon from becoming extinct. Sturgeon are the oldest fresh water fish species in North America and have been around for over 150 years – that’s two ice ages! Through this role, I'm able to spend time with other Shell retirees, like John, and support a community program.

I've had the chance to travel and meet choristers from around the world but the most special was the experience was performing alongside 630 choristers from across Canada for the Canada 150 Celebrations in Ottawa.

As a member of @kxcalgary, I've participated in many Sunday Services, Special services (Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve) and other services such as in Weddings and Funeral services as a chorister.  I've had the chance to travel, meet choristers from around the world, and fundraise for the Red Cross International Relief Fund. But the most special experience was performing alongside 630 choristers from across Canada for the Canada 150 Celebrations in Ottawa.

I chose @escapewithstem firstly because my son and believe in his concept of using fun and hands-on STEM. Prior to COVID, I helped build puzzles and run a puzzle station at the schools or organizations we were volunteering at. During COVID, I have helped build online escape rooms.

I've been volunteering with CNCA for the past five years, and every year we have been grateful to Shell for providing grants for our programming. With their support we are able to provide music lessons, yoga sessions and more for children. We've also hosting cultural shows to showcase our talents and art. Of all our work, I am most proud of our fundraising to help flood and earthquake victims in Nepal.

My wife and I volunteer together at the @CalgaryHumaneSociety primarily as dog walkers, although we also help feeding kittens and doing laundry when it’s needed. It brings us so much joy to see animals come into the shelter, interact with the wonderful staff and volunteers, then leave to their furever home.

Why we do it: “It brings us so much joy to see animals come into the shelter, interact with the wonderful staff and volunteers, then leave to their furever home.

The Moore Ag Society is the host of the Brigden Fair every year!. Anyone from Brigden will tell you it is the best local fair in all of Lambton County. Over the years I've done everything from event management, to serving and making dinner, to being with the horses in the barn.

I’ve twice had the opportunity to be part of a Canadian Habitat Team that built homes in Taos, New Mexico and Bago, Myanmar. My quote to live by: Look inside yourself and find one thing that either you have a passion for or do well and then use that to help others less fortunate. People helping People.

I’ve been actively coaching @Furylacrosseand @BowViewRingette for the last 8 years, giving back to the community and helping young athletes grow and develop. I have volunteered with the Art Group of Calgary Chinese Dongbei Association (Calgary people from Northeast of China) for seven years. This organization helps new immigrants to adapt to new life in Canada, to become more familiar with local multi-cultures, and contribute to the happiness of societies. I support the organization as a performer of teams,

I have participated in more than 30 events, my most favourite is the annual Chinese New Year Gala. My passion in dancing and fashion modeling performance allows me to share positive energy and bring joy to the lives of others through art. Giving of your time and doing things for others makes us happier people.
