Empowering Indigenous Talent at Shell Canada

Discover meaningful career opportunities, community engagement, and inclusive support for Indigenous Peoples

Land acknowledgement

At Shell Canada, we acknowledge that our activities take place on the traditional territories, Treaty lands and settlements of many Indigenous Peoples across the country. We recognize these lands, rich cultures and diverse histories, and the profound contributions of Indigenous People as the cultural and economic fabric of Canada. As a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, we express our gratitude to those whose lands we live, explore and make our living on.

Our core values underpin everything we do. Honesty. Integrity. Respect.

These are more than just words. These are the principles that guide us in the important work of building meaningful relationships with Indigenous People and in communities where we do business. These are the values that guide Shell employees from the day they are hired, throughout their career journey.

It’s in the spirit of these values that we respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action and especially Number 92 focused on Business and Reconciliation. We respond by applying the principles and standards of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples reconciliation framework to our corporate policy and how we operate.

Our work with Indigenous People in Canada is guided by four elements:

Community engagement

We engage with our communities in a respectful, inclusive manner.

Business development

We will deliver sustainable economic benefits to impacted Indigenous communities through local contracting, local enterprise development and local workforce development.

Community investment

Shell Canada’s community investment contributes to long-term improvements and creates an environment conducive to sustainability. We do this through:

  • Education
  • Community Development
  • Health, Safety and Environment.

Employment

We provide an inclusive, supportive work environment that encourages everyone to be the best version of themselves and respects individual backgrounds and journeys. We want our workforce to reflect all of Canada and we want to attract Indigenous talent as we invest in the workforce of the future.

There’s still more to do. We understand that meaningful inclusion at Shell means involvement in ways that are meaningful for you as we work together on a sustainable, ethical energy transition.

Employment opportunities and benefits at Shell Canada

At Shell Canada, we’re committed to supporting and developing talent from Indigenous communities through meaningful career opportunities. Our established relationships help us make continued connections in the areas we operate so we can build new partnerships within Canada.

There are many ways we’re making Shell Canada an attractive and supportive place to work for Indigenous people. These include:

Employees Resource Groups (ERGs): There are several ERGs at Shell - employee-led groups that offer support and help create a diverse, inclusive environment. Shell Canada’s Indigenous Network (InNet), collaborates on events within Shell to celebrate Indigenous culture and heritage, and is a safe space for all employees to connect, learn, grow skills, and so much more.

Employee Benefits Program: At Shell Canada, all staff employees have access to an annual personal spending and wellness account. This account enables employees to access products and services such as:

  • traditional Indigenous Healers and Elders
  • traditional medicines
  • fees and supplies for traditional ceremonies

Indigenous cultural awareness eLearning: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Call to Action 92 calls for businesses to provide education for management and employees on the history of Indigenous people and the legacy of residential schools.  Shell is honoured to partner with First Nations University of Canada and Reconciliation Education to deliver an immersive course on reconciliation in Canada designed to educate and increase awareness among Shell Canada employees to support their personal journeys towards reconciliation.

Volunteering opportunities in your communities: We encourage all employees to support our communities through Shell’s employee giving program, Powering Positivity. From coast to coast, our Powering Positivity initiative allows employees to direct their support to the causes that matter most to them, providing benefits to the places where we live and work.

Summer opportunities for Indigenous students: For example, we partner with a neighbouring community at our refinery in Sarnia, ON to provide post-secondary students with meaningful summer employment. We also have a long-standing partnership with the Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards. These bursaries help Métis Albertans achieve self-sufficiency through post-secondary education and skills development.

We have career opportunities across Shell Canada. For those looking to power progress and work on the energy solutions of today and tomorrow, we'd love to hear from you.
