[Interviewer]
Do you come here often?
[George]
This is one of the spots I usually stop to get gas. It’s on the way to my tennis club, as you can see, where I’m going today.
[Interviewer]
Are you an active person?
[George]
Very active. I cycle a lot. I tennis a lot. I’m a photographer, I’m always out there hiking, those things.
[Interviewer]
What kind of photography?
[George]
Landscape photographer.
[Interviewer]
Is that your profession?
[George]
Actually, no. I was an accountant in my former life. But I didn’t like that former life, so I changed it.
[Interviewer]
What didn’t you like about it?
[George]
It was boring. I was 30 when I switched careers. I’ve been doing that now for 32 years.
[Interviewer]
Do you remember that transition, from being an accountant to..
[George]
I do, very well. I had a serious depression for a year, you can’t forget that. It was a hard time, a hard transition. Letting go of one career and knowing that it wasn’t right for me and moving on to a second, better career which allowed me to be who I am.
[Interviewer]
What was depressing about it?
[George]
Depression is a funny thing. It’s sort of genetic in my family. My mother is a Holocaust survivor from Auschwitz. My brothers also had depressions, so it’s genetic. It’s hard to explain depression if you’ve never had it. The world is black, everything is black, you don’t want to continue on. You don’t see a future.
[Interviewer]
What was it like to grow up with a mother who survived the Holocaust?
[George]
They never really spoke about it too much. But for me it brought out my joie de vivre. I want to live every day to the fullest.
[Interviewer]
What is it that you did learn from your mother’s story?
[George]
Persevere. No matter what.
